Exclamation eth0 interface...

When I start the kernel, it goes to bringing up interface eth0.
Then it thinks a while (about 5 minutes) and gives me the message to the effect of probing ports 1 - 4.
Then it says that is has taken an IP address.
Now I can't get connected in Linux.
What do I do to get my modem connected?
