eth0 - Gentoo Linux

hi,

just installed gentoo linux from www.gentoo.org - followed the manual but can't get the network up.

at startup, it says:

* Bringing eth0 up...
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

the content of the files is:

*** /etc/hostname ***
mymachine.mydomain.com

*** /etc/hosts ***
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 mymachine.mydomain.com mymachine

*** /etc/conf.d/net ***
iface_eth0="192.168.0.2 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0"
(the rest is commented out)

does anybody know what can i do? in the install procedure the network connection was ok...

What make/model of NIC, and which driver are you using for it?
It sounds like you might have a resource conflict. First, turn off Plug-N-Play support in your BIOS.
If that doesn't work:

Run "lspci |less" and see if the card appears in the resulting list.

Run ifconfig and ifconfig -a. Post the output.

Check for IRQ and I/O conflicts by running:
cat /proc/ioports
cat /proc/interrupts

Also- /etc/hosts has one IP listed, but /etc/conf.d/net lists another. I don't use Gentoo, but that doesn't seem right.

Have you had the modules loaded for the nic before? first make sure the kernel is compiled with support for your card. then do a "modprobe driver" where driver would be the .o module without the .o. once you successfully get the driver loaded. open up /etc/modules.autoload and add the driver that you loaded to the list. next time it should boot up right.
