Question Eth0 failed message

Hi,

I have a NIC card installed on my computer but no modem connected to it( since I am yet to take a cable conn.). I have RedHat 7.2 installed and when it boots up, it waits on the bringing up Eth0 message and then gives a FAILED message.which is irritating. Is there anyway, I can stop this from happening.

What make/model of NIC do you have, and what module (driver) are you using for it ?

The NIC will want to get it's basic configuration parameters (IP and netmask at least) from somewhere, either by static assignment or DHCP. My guess is that since you don't have an account with an ISP yet, there's no way that you can supply that info, so the card can't fully initialize.

Question Failed

Hi ,

From the descrpition u have given i suspect that something is wrong with /etc/modules.conf file.

i guess u know the make of ur card. this file has a alias for the module ( read "driver ") mapping it to eth0.

maybe there is two entries ( eth0 and eth1 ) in which case if either is not found then u get that kind of error.

or maybe the parameters supplied alongwith the alias are not correct.

i suggest u do one of the following until it works out for u.

1. backup that modules.conf and then erase the eth0 / eth1 related contents of the original file.
2. backup the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and delete the original file.

3. now run the kudzu utility. it should be able to detect ur card and initialize it.

NOTE : before changing or deleting any of the above mentioned
files pls ensure u have a backup of the original file and are able to restore to the original state if the above mentioned steps fail.

if u know the make of ur card then try searching on www.google.com for the drivers for ur card and try installing them.

if it does not work out pls paste the contents of ur /etc/modules.conf file on the next post along with details about ur interface card.

Hope it works for u.

Regards ,
anthium.
