eth0 doesn't work when eth1 is up

hello everyone

i'm using rh9 and i have 2 ethernet cards in installed. Now i want to do ip masquerading but first things first, my network cards are being screwy. At first I set both eth0 and eth1 to be active at start-up but i didn't have internet on my computer. Then i deactivated eth1 and eth0 and then re-activated eth0 only, and i then had internet. But i didn't have a connection with my other computer obviously. Its as if i can't have both of them working at the same time, very frustrating!

here are my settings:

eth0 (comcast cable internet)
automatically get ip (dhcp)

eth1 (to an XP machine)
ip: 10.0.0.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.0.0.1

the settings on my XP machine are:
ip: 10.0.0.5
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.0.0.1

What should i do? any help would be greatly appreciated!

How about posting the output from

ifconfig
lspci
netstat -rn

All run as root (of course).

Cheers--

One observation

Your XP's gateway address should be 10.0.0.10 (the IP of your eth1).

I am at loss about where the gateway for eth1 on your LiGNUx system is pointing to (10.0.0.1). It should not have a gateway address.

Thanks for your replies

I was just copying an example from my red hat 9 bible book, should i remove the gateway?

When i get home i'll get the info on ifconfig, lspci and netstat -rn.

All i want to do is use my red hat machine as a router to my xp machine. but before i can use the ip masquerading howto i need my ethernet cards to work.

I have a router hooked up to eth0, thats why the ip is 192.168....., I just want to do ip masquerading to learn some stuff about linux.

thanks ppuru, you solved my internet problem, but what should i do about masquerading?

I am able to ping eth1 (10.0.0.10) and eth0 (192.168.2.196) from my XP box, but it won't ping any website like www.yahoo.com.

What should i do now?

heres my new network config:
eth0
auto dhcp

eth1
ip: 10.0.0.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
no gateway

XP Machine:
ip: 10.0.0.5
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.0.0.10
