Question Eth0 and Eth1 disappeared in Debian 3.1 Sarge...

Hi there,

I've tried to update the kernel that is used during the base install of Debian 3.1 Sarge to a 2.6 kernel. It didn't really go as planned so I used the Grub menu at start up to start the "old" 2.4 kernel again.
Now when I do this, during booting it says at Eth0 and Eth1 "no such device" eventhough before I ever started compiling the 2.6 kernel(the one that didn't work) they worked perfectly. They also don't show up in the syslog as they did before.

Both Eth0 and Eth1 are a 3Com905C-TC-M 10/100MBit card.

In /etc/network/interfaces they are still listed with the correct IP's etc. but when I do an ifconfig or ifconfig -a all that is shown is the loopback interface.. lo...

When I look at /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/drivers/net/ both have the right drivers listed... only difference there is, is that the kernel I'm not using has them with .ko and the kernel I am using is with .0.

I don't get it? Nothing has changed with the 2.4 kernel so I think it should work eventhough I tried booting with the 2.6 kernel...

Am I missing something here?

I am a newbie btw...

[FIXED] kind of...

Hmmm...

It's been awhile. This problem is solved, sort of. I had to reinstall the machine because there was more wrong with it than I thought(while trying to fix it, I broke more beyond repair). Now both NIC's work perfectly.

I know it's not a real solution for others, but it worked for me... :s
