/etc/resolv.conf problem I guess......
Hi All,

This is cool....
Ever since I became a member in this community - well 3 days ago - I put one posting(question) a day and have got answers which have been fixing my problems with my RH6.1 and making me move inch by inch to my destination place.
Now that my home network is set up with my DSL Modem, RT314 router, etc etc .... I am able to ping all my LAN servers by ip address and by host names.
The problem is I am able to goto Internet (ping, ftp, telnet) only by IP address. If I open NEtscape and type in a domain name or telnet <domain name> it says unknown host.
I understand it is some kind of nameserver problem.
But my win machines on the network says Obtain DNS server dynamic. I know the Netgear router RT314 is my default gateway in my win environment as well as in my linux box. In that case why am I not able to reach the internet?
Is there anything else I should do....?
I had put in the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf still does not work. I had put because my RT314 router says primary DNS server and Secondary DNS Server as
Any help is appreciated....

You want to put the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS server in /etc/resolve.conf - that should solve your problem.

You also should check that your /etc/nsswitch.conf file contains the following:

hosts: files dns

Thanks you all.....
Finally, I got my linux machine to see outside world!!!!!
Magic that worked was, just to add this entry
in my /etc/resolv.conf is the ip of my dsl router RT314 from NetGear.

Thanks a Bunch to all who were patient in teaching me......
