error installing wireless driver
I'm having some difficulties installing my wireless driver and was hoping for some help in deciphering these error messages.
I have a Netgear WNA1000M USB b/g/n network card which uses the rtl8188cus chipset.
I downloaded the latest drivers from manufacturers website, extracted the zip file, made the "install.sh" executable and ran it with sudo. It runs fine for a while but then towards the end I get the following error messages:

I can't move it, but it looks like an old driver, or maybe you are missing something.
Theoretically, warnings are not fatal errors but that many of them is likely to be, especially the 'Werrors' near the top. It's bellyaching about the code. GCC tightened up on what is allowed (Rightly so) but nearly anything compiles under m$ windows compilers. You may also be missing some package.
If you hunt for a precompiled version you mightn't have to go through the pain of compiling it. Otherwise, go back to the source dir and run
make
it will crap out with an error. Paste what it says. It's the first error after the make we need - it could have been
"someinclude.h: file not found." There's very little real info in the tailspin.
and that helps us along mightily

I needed to know it was the first error. Then I took a pertinent phrase

Having just had this battle with my own router, and just done a Digital Comms module, 802.11n is a problem. I think linux and your hardware are still only 802.11g (max 54Mbps) compatible, whereas 802.11n claims to support 300Mbps
Set your modem/router to 802.11b/g only and not 802.11n.

Your google fu is much stronger than mine Thx business kid! After following the instructions in that last link you gave me things kinda worked. That is, it now reports that the drivers compile correctly but that there is some kind of permission error for installing them. This slightly surprises me because I did run "sudo ./install.sh" and it gives me the following error:

If you have root, use su, and try again. You can check for the module with lsmod |grep 8192
you might have to run the install line and the depmod command from a terminal with
sudo instaall <etc>
sudo depmod <etc>
But I have a question for you.

Have you got a kernel source (=500 megs worth) or a kernel headers? It looks like kernel headers to me, and I am pretty sure you need the source. |

Hmm, it seems I don't have the source and only the headers. The output of "du -ch" gives me a grand total of "46 M". Is there any way to download the source perhaps or is there something else I should do?

# apt-get source <package>
Assuming debian (or debian based). Assuming deb-src in sources.list. But you really only need the headers (for the currently running kernel). If only in theory. If it fails to compile on a file you can apt-file find that file and install the package that contains it. Not too difficult, but not something for the meek either.
# apt-file find rtl81
The module(s) in question seem to be included in debian sid's 3.11 kernel. I have no idea if they work, but apt-file find finds them. You can also get the sources from kernel.org. And make deb-pkg them to make a deb, although quite the space hog these days to go that route.
