email proxy w/ spam and virus protection

I'm looking for a a solution that would be an e-mail proxy, for incomming mail, that would block spam and scan for viruses in incomming mail. then forward e-mails to the local mail server. What I'm looking to create is our own appliance that would run linux, have a web interface and block spam and viruses then forward the mail to the e-mail server. Any ideas?

This might help. http://p3scan.sourceforge.net/

I'm currently using this plus f-prot virus scanner at home. All pop3 requests sent to the net get grabbed by p3scan and then passed through f-prot for virus checking.

You can also handle spam and renaming of attachments with a couple of extra apps.

The problem there is there will be no pop3 requests. I'm only dealing with incomming smtp.

INTERNET --<smtp>----> Email appiance---<smtp>---> Exchange server--<propietary> -----> clients
And out going would bypass the appliance all together
Baracuda networks sells a similar appliance, but their reseller program is rather bad.
Thanks for the info on the virus scanner, that might help. :Pengy:
THanks

Hmmm....I found this... http://freshmeat.net/projects/bitdef...ease_id=152436

Haven't tried it but it sounds a bit closer to what you want.

I actually have a server that covers half your answer and I am looking for the other half...
It's a RH9 with ClamAV and SpamAssissan.

It does a great job with the mail accounts on that machine, but I also have it forwarding mail to some accounts on an Exchange 5.5 box.

It scans for viruses and spam on the local users but the mail that passes through to the Exchange box doesn't get touched.

I am wondering how to get those Exchange-bound messages to go through the filters before they to to Exchange.

Any clues for a newbee?

Pete
