Easiest Internal Dial-up Modem

What is the easiest internal dial-up modem (PCI interface preferably) to get working in pcLinuxOS2007? I can't seem to make sense of any of the websites about using modems in Linux that I get directed to.

Any real modem will work perfectly. The problem is that many companies sell "winmodems" which are really implemented in software by a proprietary driver. If it's not a winmodem it will just work out of the box.

Unfortunately, they don't always tell you. Look for anything in the description that talks about including drivers, or compatibility with Windows. Real modems are compatible with all OS and don't need drivers (they are supported directly by the OS).

pci internal hardware modems are more difficult to find and usually more expensive. As macemoneta mentioned above they are the best modems to install. Most winmodems require special drivers which can be purchased through linmodem. I didn't want the external modems also but did break down and went to them because of price and ease of installation. If you do decide to go with the winmodem you need to be careful which chipset you get, I can't tell you but there is one chipset that is hard (if not impossible) to find drivers for.

Here is one model of a good brand name that is controller based (not a winmodem).

I believe the USR 5610 model will do what you need. I have one, and its controller based. I run Suse 10.2 and it came up on the first boot after I installed it. USR can cost a little more, but its worth it.

If you are going to a store to find a modem, pay close attention to the "system requirements" listed on the box. The USR had the Linux kernel version listed! If all it says is Window$, it probably won't work.
