Earthlink dial-up problems

I seem to have a peculiar problem with Earthlink dial-up. I am using kppp with an older version of Knoppix. I seem to log onto Earthlink without any problems, but I cannot seem to access anything. I have pinged the server to check that I am online, but cannot seem to do anything else. I have already called Earthlink Support, but have found that they do not support linux. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

What server have you pinged? Try to ping google here:

ping 64.233.161.99
ping www.google.com

See if you get a response from either. If you get response only on IP the is a DNS problem if you get nothing on both then may be a deeper issue.

I have successfully pinged the Earthlink PPP server, but I cannot ping the google server with it's ip address.

Perhaps your logged into the registration server... Check your DNS settings again...

I have been able to log onto the account on a friends computer running knoppix live. I am wondering if this problem is due to a modem driver problem.
