e-mail server

I NEED HELP IF ANYONE IS WILLING
I HAVE A LINKSYS ROUTER SETUP TO FORWARD PORTS 25 AND 110 TO MY E-MAIL SERVER.
THE SERVER IS RUNNING REDHAT 9 AND I'M HAVING PROBLEMS.
I RECEIVED DOCS ON HOW TO DO THIS BY HTTP://WWW.NETIKUS.NET/DOCUMENTS/LIN...STALLATION.PDF
GRET MANUAL BY THE WAY

FIRST THING WAS SETUP DNS THAT WENT FINE AFTER ABOUT 20 HOURS.
NEXT WAS SENDMAIL. I DID WHAT THEY SAID AND WHEN I TESTED IT.
EVERYTHING WORKED THIS IS HOW THEY HAD ME TEST IT.

TELNET LOCALHOST 25

GREAT 220 LOCALHOST.LOCALHOST ESTMP SENDMAIL AND VERSION
I THEN SENT A E-MAIL
MAIL FROM :SYSTEM.GNECOMPUTING.COM
RCPT TO: SHADOW5788@ADELPHIA.NET
DATA

THAT WORKED FINE

SO THEN I TRIED TELNET SYSTEM.GNECOMPUTING.COM 25
IT SAID SOMETHING LIKE TRING 192.168.89.2 CONNECTION REFUSED.

AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY. AND FIREWALL IS TURNED OF ON LINUX FOR CONF

THEN I EDITED THE SENDMAIL.CF FILE MY OFFICIAL DOMAIN NAME
THEN I TRIED TELNET LOCALHOST 25 WORKED AGAIN BUT THIS TIME IT SAID LOCALHOST.GNECOMPUTING.COM

TRIED TELENT SYSTEM.GNECOMPUTING.COM 25 REFUSED AGAIN
TRIED TELNET LOCALHOST.GNECOMPUTING.COM REFUSED AGAIN.

CAN SOMEONE HELPME WHAT I WANT TO DO IS
HAVE ONE SERVER THAT CAN SEND E-MAIL FOR MY NETWORK DOMAIN AND BE ABLE TO HAVE MY BROTHER LOG ON FROM A REMOTE LOCATION TO SEND AND RECEIVE MAIL.

THIS TASK IS REAL HARD IN LINUX AND THE MANUALS CONFUSING.

I USE TO HAVE A WINDOWS 2000 DOMAIN RUNNING EXCHANGE THAT DID
POP3 INCOMING A SMTP FOR MY NETWORK AND EXTERNALY WITH VERY EASY CONF.

WALK ME THROUGH THE PROCESS.

BY THE WAY DOES MY SENDMAIL SERVER NEED TO BE SET TO RELAY FOR OTHER COMPUTERS TO USE IT'S E-MAIL SENDING POWER.

AND MY POP3 SERVER WHEN I TELNET GNECOMPUTING.COM 110
SAYS IT'S READY HOW DO I CONFIG THIS AND HOW DO I ADD USERS AND MAILBOX LINITS AND ETC.

THE FTP,APPACHE,SAMBA DOMAIN CONTROLLER WERE ALL MANAGABLE TO SET UP EACH ONLY TOOK ABOUT 2 HOURS EXCEPT SAMBA WHICH TOOK 5
BUT E-MAIL IS A KILLER CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. SORRY POST IS SUCH JIBBER BUT I'M GETTING FRUSTRATED TRING TO DO THIS.

I THINK LINUX RUNS MUCH BETTER AND CHEAPER BUT IT IS HARDER THEN WINDOWS BUT WORTH THE FRUSTRATION WHEN IT WORKS.

>HAVE ONE SERVER THAT CAN SEND E-MAIL
You can either route all you outgoing email through your
ISP's outgoing smtp server or you can try to do
direct-to-mx mail. Many places block direct-to-mx mail
from dialup and home users because it's mostly spam.

>IT SAID SOMETHING LIKE
Allways quote the _exact_ error message if you want
a helpful reply.

>TELNET SYSTEM.GNECOMPUTING.COM 25
I presume you want your server to receive incoming email
addressed to username@gnecomputing.com ?

>BE ABLE TO HAVE MY BROTHER LOG ON FROM A REMOTE >LOCATION TO SEND AND RECEIVE MAIL
You can let yor brother receive mail by giving him a pop box.
Letting him send email is more troublesome. You have to set it up so his mail client authenticates before sending email either pop-before-smtp or by logging in to the mail server. Anything else will result in spammers using your bandwidth and getting you blacklisted.

>BY THE WAY DOES MY SENDMAIL SERVER NEED TO BE SET TO >RELAY FOR OTHER COMPUTERS TO USE IT'S E-MAIL SENDING >POWER
You must make sure that it does _not_ relay for other computers on the internet. Relaying for other computers on your LAN is ok.
