Dynamic IP services that are free and don't suck?
I just found that I cannot use no-ip, my host gets delays regularly, because the IP has not changed and it is not updating it:
... Out of their FAQ: --- The second case happens when everything is setup properly, but your ISP (cable/dsl provider) has not issued you a new IP address in the past 30 days. The update client will only transmit an update to our severs if the address it has is different from the previous one. If you are not using one of the paid DNS services this will cause your host names to go into a "Pending Deletion" state. To avoid the pending deletion state you can do any of the below: Log in to www.no-ip.com and modify/update the host name Restart your cable/dsl modem (ISP may issue you a new IP Address) Upgrade to No-IP Enhanced or No-IP Plus .... So my question is: are there any dynamic IP DNS services that are both FREE and don't suck? No-ip basically just told me: log in manually to our site or pay for it, otherwise it will not work. This is unacceptable for me. I used to use dyndns, but they also went commercial only. Are there other services? I don't need much, just for one host, to have a host name that I can reach it over the internet, I don't even care how the domain is called. |
Free dns services that don't suck get overloaded until they do :-P. Pay - that's my advice.

If not, since your IP address changes to infrequently do you really need this kind of thing at all? Perhaps just set up a script to email you if the IP address changes? |
Kind of two issues. One is I'd suspect ISP's may rotate IP's more often when they see some types of activity. This is a very subjective statement and it is only from my personal observations.
Another issue may be that you can set your app that follows the ip change to a faster state. In all cases, any time you change an ip there is a lag and loss usually. See how much it costs for a static IP from your isp. |
Thanks guys, it looks like free dynamic IP hostname services have come to an end.
I will not pay for something as trivial as this. And the post with mailing me the changed IP address reminded me how incredible trivial this really is and how I will just write a script myself. |
DDNS services usually offer a program. Many have linux programs.

[solved]
I now use Duck DNS, it works really well, is reliable and free.
