Dynamic Gateway
My ISP has a dynamic gateway. After connecting via ppp to the provider, I need to log in as root, get the gateway via ifconfig and add the gateway via the route command.
Is there a way to configure Linux to obtain the correct gateway automatically without having to log on as root everytime?

Ick... what a weird way to run the ISP. What kind of connection is this? cable? DSL? there's a nifty little client called Roaring Penguin that a lot of people have tons of success with that automates many of the headaches involved with pppoe.

ppp gateway
i think you might have a default gateway setup at boot or something.
to set up ppp to automatically configure the remote gateway just do
/sbin/route del default (you can omit this step if you remove your gateway settin from /etc/sysconfig/network)
and then dial out on your modem. your gateway will be setup automatically by ppp
if that don't work add the line
defaultroute
in you /etc/ppp/options file
and try it again.

What Penseur2 said, RP is built for cable and DSL pppoe. I thought you were dealing with broadband, my apologies.

Thanks for all your help.
The defaultroute in /etc/ppp/options have done the trick.
