Just installed Redhat 7.1 and am eventually going to have it doing IP masq with a Win95 box behind it and a connection to a cable modem in front. Unfortunately, I've run into a problem that is not covered in the few IP masq HOWTOs that I can find.
I have two ethernet cards in the linux box, a 3Com and a DLink, both of which work properly if they are the only active card. Eth0 is connected to the cable modem, eth1 is connected by a xover cable to my win95 box. If I have eth0 active on boot and eth1 not, then I can ping the outside world and such through eth0. If I have eth1 active on boot and eth 0 not, then my linux box and my win95 box can ping each other just fine (win95 box has eth1 as its gateway). However, if I have both eth0 and eth1 active on boot, only eth0 works properly, I can no longer ping back and forth between my two boxes.
My main mistake was assuming a network restart would do the trick whenever I changed config info, so the little things I was trying to get it working weren't being registered. Reboot the thing and it works fine, I can ping between the two boxes and the linux box can ping the outside world. Now I can set up my IP masq stuff.
