The partition splitter I was thinking of was fips (First Interactive Partition Splitter) because it comes with many distributions like Mandrake or RedHat in the DOS utilities directory. To split a partition with fips you would first defragment the disk, thus moving all of the information stored on it to the front of the partition. Then you would run fips and split the partition into two; one with windows stuff on it, and the other blank. The next time you boot Windows, you should see a new logical drive showing up which is inaccessible.

When you install your distribution you would use the partitioning tool to delete the partition you just made, and use the free space to create partitions for Linux.

This is just a tip from a poor fool who's been there, take it or leave it. Don't try to partition or install Linux today. Take a week, read the post here and anything else you can get you hands on. If you try to fly blind during an install you will crash and burn and be one of many who blame then abandon Linux. Invest a little time before you start and you will be much happier with the results.

Thanx for advice! But, already took it... I've spent a lot of time here asking some really dumb questions...as some people here must know

Anyway, got my brand new shiny grey box and already partitioned it (I think?) Now just waiting for the brand new shiny grey box to finish formating!

Hope I don't stay too late!

HHH
