D-Link DWL650

I have the same Dell cpi laptop and the same wireless pcmcia card.
To make the laptop work with any wireless card you need to find out what chipset the card uses. DWL650 uses the Atheros chipset. Madwifi.org has the appropriate drivers.
Instead of DSL I am using Puppy Linux 3.01, which I find a lot easier to work with, and Puppy includes lots of drivers for both ethernet and wireless cards, including Atheros based cards.
If you choose to stay with DSL, madwifi.org will give you the specific information you need.
Good luck!

you should replace eth0 to "ath0" which is from your output you posted to me. NOT 'eth0'
ath0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:""

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

As what I said, your device name is ath0, not eth1 nor eth0. ath0 is your device name and please try again, I am sure once you supply the right device name, your network will be up and running.

Well that didn't last very long, I took the cd out and rebooted to so I could do some work around the house, I came back in rebooted to the cd did every thing again sense backup/restore could not find a good spot to do it's thing tried /hd & /hd1 & /sda1 wouldn't except non of them, Anyway typed everything back in and it told me (connection failed). So I guess I am going to give up the Linux thing for a while or least a couple weeks

I do not quite understand your problem. Do you mean that your network connection failed after you rebooted your computer? If this is the case, simply do what I mentioned and construct a script to automatically connect to the network upon booting.

If your problem is backup/restore, then you need to find out how your DSL sees your devices. Depending on your version, it could be hda1, hda2, hda3, hda4, ..., hdb1, hdb2, hdb3, ..., or sda1, sda2, sda3, .... If you are using the hard drive, it should be hda1, ..., hdax. Be sure that your partition is either in ext2 or fat. DSL does not natively backup/restore in NTFS partitions. If you are using USB flash drives, the device name is normally sda1, sda2, sda3, ..., sdax. The same rules apply, only ext2 or fat partition is supported.
