Dropped SSH connections

Dear All,

I've recently upgraded (fresh install) to Debian Lenny. I've got everthing running without a hitch (web services, file server, dns, etc), but I'm having a problem with maintaining SSH connections: they seem to time out after an idle while, yet if I try to log in anew I'm getting a "connection timed out" error. I can still ping the address without any problems at all.

Is there any tool or log I should use to track the source of this problem down?

PS: This may be a networking problem - when I do a port scan after a dropped connection, I see no opened ports at all on that server.

Something like this may help with the dropped ssh connections (depending on the cause):
$ echo 'ServerAliveInterval 45' >> ~/.ssh/config
See the manpages for ssh_config(5) for details.

How is it that you're accessing the server again after you can mysteriously no longer connect to the sshd service? What are you doing to "fix" the problem?
