I am running a DSL 1.5 mb connection, SuSE 9.2 Pro, Compaq NC3120 Fast Ethernet NIC
Configured DHCP, Linksys Router DL 514.

When I d/l a file, say from suse.com I notice that my internet browsing is at a crawl. However, my downloads are blazing along, and using ALL of my bandwidth (150+ kb/s). This happens with all downloads and browsers.

Browsers tried:
konqueror
firefox

Window managers tried:
GNOME
KDE
Fluxbox

Any advice?

u can limit downloading with wget :
wget url/to/file --limit-rate xxxxx

maybe gui download programs support limited downloading. i dont know much about them. another option can be using squid proxy with delaying pools support. squid can limit downloading.

but i would like to limit bandwidth usage when d/l ing a file from browser like firefox...

i'd suggest looking at shaping rather than limiting... you have that bandwidth, so use it! just use it better... ther'es loads of ways to implementing QoS. try wondershaper. http://lartc.org/wondershaper/ this is a real simple script that basically helps balance out up and downstream traffic to improve browsing. to be honest as both sets of traffic are on port 80 i don't know how wel it will work, but ipcop implements a version of QoS based on this script, and with it enabled while the wife is using 99.5% of our bandwith on bittorrent, my srufing is now as good as with no load. certainly worth a go... no reason to deliberately knee-cap yourself if there's a way to get the best of both worlds.
