Does smb.service need to run to CONNECT to samba shares on another machine?

Over on http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...es-4175549373/ I'm trying to figure out why it's taking 3 minutes to book my computer on very modern hardware. It takes 21 seconds to load smb.service. On this Linux computer I often connect to my Windows computer to transfer stuff from Windows. Do I need smb.service to be running? Or is that only if I want to share a Linux folder?

Thanks!

You connect with another server using the samba client.

You need run the samba server daemon (smbd) only if wish to run a samba file server.

You are most welcome.

You might gain some hint as to why the connection seems to connect slowy by running smbclient. This article will tell you more: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-8.html

Be aware, though, that this is merely a shot in the dark. I've never used smbclient for that purpose, but it can't hurt. http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-8.html
