Do NFS and SAMBA conflict?

I have a couple directories shared with both SAMBA and NFS. My wife and I both access these directories. She runs XP, and I run a RH9/XP dual boot (I'm usually in RH9). Anyway, a couple days ago we managed to wipe out an entire directory. I don't know how it happened, but I didn't think much of it as I was able to restore it from a backup.

Just a while ago my wife copied a file into one of these directories shared by both services, and suddenly all my NFS shares croaked. I couldn't stop the NFS service and ended up rebooting the server. I'm wondering if the two services conflict in some way and if there is a way to surmount the issue.

They shouldn't conflict. My last employer, we had Samba shares and NFS shares on the same directories that was shared between 250+ employees without any problems.

Hmmm.... any possible insights on what might be causing the random lock-ups I've been experiencing? Anything I should be testing out? I'm not seeing anything in the /var/log/messages file.
