I'm using RHLE5 and am trying to virtual host my second domain on a server that had been working for a couple of months. The problem started when I tried to get sendmail working.
When I do a dig virtdomain.com com I get the A record and the godaddy nameservers. -OK
If i do a dig virtdomain.com I get the A record and godady nameservers.
When I do a dig mail.virtdomain.com, i get host not found (NXDOMAIN), even though I have an A record setup with mail.virtdomain.com and the static IP (from covad) AND a MX record that points the host to mail.virtdomain.com.
The IP of A record is the the same one that I'm using for the host box.
I tried putting the godaddy nameservers in my /etc/resolv.conf but that stopped dig, nslookup and ping. When I put the nameservers from covad in /etc/resolv.conf - dig, ping, etc works (to places like covad.net, yahoo.com, etc).
Can anyone give me an idea or two on this. I've gone around a week on and would like to fix it so I can receive email.
BTW my host box sits behind a router but not sure if that makes a big difference.
I've opened a request to their support but i'm afraid they will point me to the same tool i've been using.
thanks for any ideas

I think I may have found the problem.
I'm not sure why godaddy's confuration is strange but for the virtual domain I had to set the MX record up with a '.' (dod) at the end.
10 @ virtualdomain.com. realdomain.com.
The real domain does not use that type of notation. When I added it and the WAITED for an hour that portion (NXDOMIAN) went to NOERROR.
the '.' notation at the end is how DNS records are setup.
I still cannot ping but that may be a different issue.
