DNS records hard to change at registrar
 

I have 2 domain names I purchased from "networksolutions" many years ago and transfered to "crazydomains" when I found that the unused (by me) sites were used for advertising by networksolutions, I have now 2 hosted "linodes" and I wanted to make the DNS records of those domain names point to Linode. However, it seems that "crazydomains" makes it hard (possibly impossible) to have DNS records pointing to something outside.
Knowing nothing about DNS records and having to follow instructions to set them up, I thought I'd get a bit of advise before pushing any further on the subject since, from what I read, obstructing that sort of move is not uncommon although it seems to relate to domain names sold and held by the same registrar rather than purchased from another, as in my case.
If I understood correctly, one Internet source suggests to host my own DNS to solve the problem which, if possible at all, could be a temporary solution although I always thought, possibly erroneously, that there could only be one source of DNS records on the Internet for the same domain name.

What I need is:

1) A bit of clarification regarding what looks obscure to me.
2) Possibly a tip on how to effectively transfer my 2 domain names from "crazydomains" (I have nothing else with them) to a registrar from which I can easily adapt the DNS
3) Perhaps a few names of registrars that have a good professional reputation (I am not against returning to "networksolutions" if necessary)

I know I'll probably get shot down in flames but I've used GoDaddy for many years, both as a direct customer and as a reseller. I've found on the few occasions I've had to contact them for support they've been pretty good.

They have a fairly easy to use DNS product that lets you do just about anything you need to do to your zone files with a web interface.

Self hosting DNS is possible but the reality is that it's a pain in the butt as you need to sort out things like glue records and maintain your own DNS servers. Not really complicated but another thing that can go wrong and you can end up in a mess.

You should be able to specify any name server you want at any registrar. The registration record should allow you to specify which name servers you want to use. The registrar's own name servers are probably included in the registration, you may have to pay for name service otherwise.

I agree with TenTenths about the challenges of running your own name server. Besides what he mentioned, the name server RFCs require at least two (three is better) name servers, each in different subnets.

The easiest (for me) way to avoid having a "parked" domain present ads is to create a construction page on your web server and point at that.

Alternatively, don't specify a name server for a domain, and it won't/can't resolve to ads. You should have complete control of that at any registrar you use.

2 possible choices,
Let The Registrar "manage" (more like assign defaults, but they work) or...

Without a domain.tld I can't help much
But...
If they use defaults, you will still have the chance to set the A Record for any entry in your GD > DNS portion of the dashboard

when you get frustrated, just remember the A Record is they key to any dns entry.
Think of it like a telephone number.
That "number" (A Record or telephone number) can only call the place assigned, its IP Address or A Record

Incidentally, I tried to transfer to dnsmadeeasy, got an email to activate my new account and on clicking the link, got an apology within seconds (from them as far as I could tell unless it was from the ISP) saying something had gone wrong but "OUR TECHNICAL TEAM IS ALREADY WORKING ON THE PROBLEM" (wow!) then nothing else happened, that was 3 days ago, hope the technical team did not die of exhaustion on the job. Having no news from dnsmadeeasy anyway (expired or unanswered link if the "problem" was not theirs), I decided to give that a miss.

Now trying to transfer to "godaddy".

GoDaddy has abandon "tickets" and removed their email address leaving only their phone for communications so I have come to the conclusion I am probably better staying with crazydomains.
"chat" is reported as been unavailable permanently.

I am very happy with TransIP. Their support is great. If you have to register .com and .net domains it should work for you. They do not offer .au domains.
