DNS Issues ...


I am having problems accessing the internet. I am running Debian Sarge and am obtaining an IP address from a DHCP server used for visitors in my building. From running ifconfig I have confirmed that I am obtaining an IP address correctly ... using iptables -L I see that all policies are set to accept ... my resolv.conf file lists the appropriate DNS for our network ... also I am able to ping the DNS ... windows machines obtaining IP addresses from the DHCP server are able to browse the internet just fine ... I suspect that there are some problem resolving domain names because I can open web pages using the their IP address, but not their domain names ... I AM a newbie so I am sure there is something I am missing ... All help and insight would be much appreciated ...

DNS issue

This can be resolved by enter in the right DNS server address.
Use your Win system to find out about the DNS "ipconfig /all"

You have to do this every time you join a new network.
Do anyone know how to configure so that it get the new DNS server automatically?

I know what the IP addresses are for the DNS on the network and they are entered in my resolve.conf file correctly ... and other than that I'm stuck ...

what says "dig www.google.com" for example? (or nslookup www.google.com)

This should display all information from the DNS-server about that domain..

Using both dig and nslookup I am able to find out the IP address of a site, for example with .... dig www.google.com it returns (among other information that I can't sort out) the IP addressess 64.233.167.99, and 64.233.167.104 ... both of which when entered into my web browser take me to the google home page. I did not specify which DNS server to use when using dig, so it correctly used the DNS listed in my resolv.conf file.

edit: I've been checking out other posts and trying things that others suggest for similar problems and I am getting some confusing output ...

"route -n" gives the following output:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

is this the proper or expected output?

Turn off proxy settings in your browser, e.g. set it to connect directly.

I am (as far as I know) not connecting to a proxy server ... my settings (in Konqueror) says that I "Connect to the Internet directly" ... are there proxy setting elsewhere within linux that may be giving me problems ... because the Konqueror settings are fine ...

additional info: I can sucessfully trace a domain name using mtr ... 0% loss on between all transfers ... very handy utility in visualizing my ability to resolve domain names ... but does not explain why I can't resolve them from a web browser set to connect directly to the internet (no proxy) ...

All help will be greatly appreciated ... Thanks

I think I may have isolated my problem ... all the time that I have been trying to use Konqueror I have been running as a normal user .... and when I have been checking my configuration files and using networking utilities (ie ifconfig, route, dig, mtr, iptables, etc) I have been using a root console in KDE. Finally I tried using the mtr utility logged on as a normal user, only to have it fail. I said ... wtf ... and then checked my resolv.conf (with vim) only to have it appear blank ... what initially I had attributed to a networking issue is apparently a bad case of me being a newbie ... if someone could tell me how to resolve this issue(ie figure out why my resolv.conf is blank unless logged on as root) I can finally move on ... at least I learned some things ...

I'm finally able to browse the internet from my linux box ... all is right in the world ... I am writing this to thank everyone who helped me along the way ... my solution ... set the privileges of the resolv.conf file to all can read using the command (as root): "chmod a+r resolv.conf"
