DNS Help


Hi !

Does someone here use a free secondary dns service ?

There are a lot out there, but i would like a good one :-)

Can someone advise me here ?

Never used it, but there's OpenDNS.

opendns.com is a recursive server. i need an authoritative one.

Authoritative ? Could you please elaborate what exactly you're looking for ?

From your initial post it looks like you wanted DNS name servers for name resolution for your network/computer.

If you're looking for a free DNS service for hosting your domain then dyndns.com comes to mind.

I'd bet he's looking for somebody to slave his zone. He probably has one IP address, and wants to have a slave server somewhere else.

I don't know of any free slave servers offhand.

Exactly what jimbass said.

There are some free secondary dns around...but i don't know no one that use them. I just want to know if they work well.

Well, its actually pretty hard to screw up. The whole nature of a slave server is to configure it to pull the zones from the master. As long as they can get the zone from your master, the slave copy should be every bit as good.

Give it a shot. The vast majority of the time, only the first name server gets hit, the secondary is just that, a failover if the primary is down.
