DNS fails on router after a few min

Hi,
I have mandrake 10 installed on my computer dual booting with win2k.
I have an ECI B-Focus 270pr ADSL router that connects 2 computers to the network.
The router is used as a gateway for the 2 computers.
When both computers are loaded with win2k I have no problems.
When I load mandrake on one of them everything is fine for a few min after I begin to surf the web and all of a sudden I cannot DNS resolving doesn't work any more.
Mozilla won't load any web sites KPhone won't work ect'
On the other hand direct IP surfing does work so if I put http://216.109.118.75 I can load yahoo.
Ping to this IP address works but ping to http://www.yahoo.com does not.
When this strange DNS hang happens both computers have the problem so I know its the router that went crazy and not mandrake. On the other hand since this never happens when I run win2k then I think its something with the mandrake network configuration.
The only think I can do when the problem pops it head is to reset the router and everything is back to normal for a few more minutes.

I have disbaled IPv6 since I read that it might cause this kind of problems on some routers but it didn't help.
I tried to give the Mdk computer both static and DHCP IP addresses - didn't help.
I tried to disable the firewall on the router - no help too.

ifconfig shows this (if it helps)...

th0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:8D:E1:2D:54

Anyone has any ideas?

could you explain how did you change the ECI modem to become a router ?

I have tried this but i could not get an IP (using DHCP) from the router ECI 270PR.

Have any idea ?

Thanks.

You first need to upgrade the firmware.
Do you have it?
And can you read hebrew?
If so I can send you the instructions if not then tell me and I"ll try to help.

hi.

Thanks for the reply but after tweaking linux for a couple of days it worked out.

All i had to do is configure the eth0 do use DHCP (with no static IP)
and then run "ifup eth0".

Magically it got an IP from the router (ECI) and now im all the way inside the WWW !!!

I still am trying to figure out which protocol im using. Seems like pppoe but cannot say for sure. Any idea how to check it ?
Another thing regards the eMule ports that seem to be blocked in the ECI router's firewall. Have a clue how to unblock them ?

PS - what is the firmware needed for ? do i still need it ?

Thanks again.

Hi,
Well the upgrade solves the emule problem and makes it a bit easier to open ports in the built in firewall.

Now I must say that I upgraded the firmware before I used linux and on windows noting went wrong.
When I began to use linux I started getting the problem described above.
Since then I gave up on mandrake and installed FC2. At first I had the same problems but after I disabled IPV6 everything seemed to work ok.
The up2date seems like a cause of the same problem but I can't say why or what exactly happens.
Anyway I'm planning to dump the modem when I can.
Still with IPV6 disabled I just don't get what is the difference between linux and windows when it comes down to the modem.

About your other question - what do you mean which protocol r u using?
Do you mean tcp/udp?
