DNS doesnt work in any distro

Ok, i've tried knoppix, ubuntu, gentoo, mepis and none are able to do DNS lookups. I have a 700m dell laptop, the builtin wireless works sorda on most but doesnt lookup dns, built in doesnt work most of the time and doesnt find DNS, i got a PCMCIA card that is detected, but it wont do dns.

Funny thing is it wont do it on my work network either, except the PCMCIA card did for a while, but now i'm back home and nothing. I can ping my dns servers, i see them in /etc/resolv.conf, what else does it need? every other machine on my network has no trouble with DNS.

I can point it to my NAT router (192.168.1.1) and it resolves but very very slowly (minutes)

I'm so lost because it happens in all linux distros, got gentoo 1/2 installed but cant because i cant emerge anymore :(

only reason i got this 700m was for linux, help me not use windows...

you have a router... so I assume you are running as a dhcp client?

helfire 06-16-2005 07:11 PM

yes, and it gets all the right info too, dns, ip, gw, subnet... thats why it's so confusing to me.

mcd 06-16-2005 07:11 PM

first thing i would do is confirm that your firewall allows outbound udp packets on port 53. if that's open, then i would run tcpdump in a terminal while you try connecting to a webpage or whatever, and see what's happening to the packets.

rkettle 06-16-2005 07:14 PM

what does ifconfig say and what does your router say?

run

#tail -f /var/log/messages

and see what is happening

Its asking all my name servers for the IP

IP 192.168.1.50.domain > 66.133.170.2.domain: 25252+ A? slashdot.org.frontiernet.net. (46)

now i dont see why it's adding my isp's domain to the end.

it was my search domain but I took it out of my resolv.conf and it didnt change. I guess both my wirless and wired are working poperly, i can ping inside and out via IP (i'm in knoppix 3.9 right now)

edit:
i'll ssh in so i can copy/paste
my /var/logmessages hasnt shown anything yet

ifconfig:
knoppix@3[~]$ ifconfig

helfire 06-16-2005 07:36 PM

ummmm ok now for not apparent reason it's resolving domains... no idea why.

going to put knoppix on my hd and reboot, see what happens.

mcd 06-16-2005 07:37 PM

grats! at least it's working, hehe.

rkettle 06-16-2005 07:37 PM

if you are using dhcp from your firewall then it should be no prob.

seems to me that your dns is all messed up.

traceroute to a site and grab the dns on the way and use route to add it.

Give yourself a static internal address with a gateway and dns.

Richard

mcd: ya, for how long :D

rkettle:" traceroute to a site and grab the dns on the way and use route to add it."

little confused on what you mean.

here's a traceroute to www.yahoo.com (took a long time...)
