Hi!
I just setup Samba server in Windows network. Everything works great, except I can only connect to websites using IP address, when I enter domain name, nothing happens. I use the same DNS server IP for Linux box, like Win boxes use!! The IP is 151.196.0.39, I can even ping it! I added it to my resolv.conf and did /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart! Whats could be wrong? Thank you!
Do the logs mention failed name resolution attempts?
Also, try doing a "nslookup" (DNS query, make sure to use the DNS server as default) instead of a "ping".
Maybe DNS access is denied, hence causing the failed DNS resolution.
I can ping the IP you gave me, but couldn't do an "nslookup" on it.
Well, I can use just any DNS server right? Do you know any that really works? I searched for a fiew, but they didn't work for me! just the ping! Thanks!
Now I am confused. Are you trying to use someone else's DNS server? What good would that do you?
Please also provide some details as to what you are trying to accomplish exactly.
You said you can't browse to websites via the hostname, it only works via IP address. This indeed indicates a name resolution issue. Do you have your own DNS server? What machines are you trying to access? Local machines (ie your Windows boxes) or remote ones (like Google)?
Please also post the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts for starters.
