DNS: connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Hello,

i'm running an SMTP server on my LAN. I also setup a DNS server, which resolvs host in my LAN. I put the nameservers of my ISP into /etc/bind/named.conf as forwarders. The nameserver set in /etc/resolv.conf is 127.0.0.1.

From time to time, i notice, that there are queued messsages to yahoo.com mailboxes.

Doing then

dig mx yahoo.com

returns

; <<>> DiG 9.2.1 <<>> mx yahoo.com
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Still i can resolve enything else, but not yahoo. I tried to add a forwarder of another ISP which certainly could resolve (dig @ip-on-another-isp mx yahoo.com suceeded) yahoo, but i still got that error message.

Have you an idea, why does this fail? Is there something misconfiguread at my LAN's DNS server?

Peter

Put the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf, if you want, put your IP address first, then your ISPs DNS servers 2nd and 3rd.

Then check your /etc/nsswitch.conf to make sure it goes files dns
