Any suggestions for DNS Server Distro?
 

Hi all,


I'm looking at setting up a DNS/Bind server and I would like to go the easiest and fastest route possible. Does anyone out there know of a distro that will support my needs AND is easy and fast to configure/install? I've pretty much stuck with slackware and slackware based distros and I am looking at trying something new or different...GUI driven distros are ok too. I just want to see if there is something quick and easy I can flop onto a harddisk and get it up onto my network to serve as my full fledged DNS server.

Oh yeah...and NO knoppix...when you say knoppix, I say MEPIS and I go with that instead. I hate knoppix...mainly because it's the "in" thing for linux users right now. I've always prided myself on my loyalty to slackware. I could just set up another slackbox but I'd rather give another quick and easy distro a try cuz I don't have a lot of time to configure things right now. Any suggestions?

Well...in case of BIND server the main point would be to set up Bind... All 'easy' distros (MDK, RH...) have it with quite good defaults. Debian has also good defaults. But there will be still time needed to secure the machine.

I know most distros can be configged with it. I was wondering which one seems to be the easiest to administrate via GUI...guess it really doesn't matter. I should probably just choose KDE or Gnome, get at it and drop it on top of something.

Why in the world would you run an X server on a dedicated DNS server? There are plenty of BIND tutorials and sample config files out there, just use Google a little bit.

It's not for me to administer...it's for someone who knows nothing of command line administration.

Well I hate to break it to you, but giving someone a Linux box running BIND is not a great idea if they don't know what they're doing...

If they don't know how to use Linux, then they're going to be hopeless no matter what distribution you load for them. Maybe you should start by teaching them a few things, such as how to use a text editor (vi, emacs, pico, etc), how to to navigate the file system, and how to set and check file permissions.
