directory permissions

I know this question has been asked a million times because I have spent a lot of time searching this forum for my answer but cannot find it. I am trying to set permissions on a directory where the group users will have rwx rights.

The problem is when anyone creates a new file the permissions are changed to that of the new owner. I have read many times the chmod man pages and just cannot get a handle on this sticky bit thing and how that would help my problem.

Thanks
Tom

set umask to 006

I set the umask to 006, when I output it umask it gives me 771 which is what I want. What is confusing me is that when a user creates a file the permissions are drwxr-sr-x which is not what I want. I do not even know what the "s" indicates.

Thanks for the help
Tom

Take at look at this:

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/...ect_03_04.html

There's good info on umask there, as well as a section named "3.4.2.4. Special modes", which has an explanation of that 's'.
