Differences between SASL PLAIN and LOGIN mechanism?

When I sniff the datas of SASL authentication(AUTH PLAIN) with snort, I get a ASCII string, Does that the encrypt password of UNIX system account by crypt(3)? Or say: What's the means of PLAIN?

If use AUTH LOGIN, I can get different ASCII string, so what about the differences between PLAIN and LOGIN mechanism?

Thank you.

Well, how does the ASCII string generate?

For example, I use mutt + esmtp, so if I config ~/.esmtprc like this:
hostname = smtp.domain.com:25
username = "roc"
password = "WRONG-PASS"

Then I snort the datas, I get:
AUTH PLAIN AHJvYwBXUk9ORy1QQVNT.

I read some documents and say: PLAIN use clear-text password(for example, the: /usr/share/doc/cyrus-sasl-devel-2.1.10/draft-zeilenga-sasl-plain-01.txt & http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/cyrus/sysadmin.html), Is AHJvYwBXUk9ORy1QQVNT the clear-text? I just found it is double length than the password.

and the LOGIN mechanism:
AUTH LOGIN cm9j..
334 UGFzc3dvcmQ6..
V1JPTkctUEFTUw==..

Is there anyone can give me some advices?

Thank you.
