dialup ISP connects, but no data can be transfered

I have RedHat 7.3 with a modem and ethernet card installed. I started
without enabling networking so as to get my dialup (win) modem working.
I'm connected to the internet via that modem, now. Recently I
enablabled the ethernet card, eth0. As result of this when I use
ppp all the connecting goes fine however i can not access the web
w/ a browser or other apps .... (I disabled eth0 to connect tonight) I've
read that eth0 can coexist with
ppp
this brief article sayes:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ROUTES though have to be correctly defined, specially the
default routes. There should be no default route active when the ppp
session is started, to let the ISP side set it for you (other chained
machines, if any, of course routed to the box actually connected to
the ISP).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So after all that, my question is does anyone know how to go about
doing that?or does anyone know another way to use ppp wiht eth0?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply, this seems like it should be the solution however
when I do I get the message "dev: Host lookup failure" or
"dev: Unknown host".

Any additional information would be appreciated.

thanks again

P.S.
I'm using Kppp to connect so I was curious what ppp scripts to modify.

Ah, kppp, eternally buggy piece of software. Ditch it try wvdial instead.

I downloaded the program you suggested it does seem like an
improvement. I still have a routing problem however (your syntax
appears valid from what I've read).

I recently read my mail messages they go like this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can't locate these modules:
ppp0: 17 Time(s) --------------------------> ( strange because ifconfig shows it when I'm connected )
ppp-compress-21: Time(s)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was thinking that this might be part of the problem. I then looked in
/etc/modules.conf I found aliases for ppp (to ppp_generic) no mention
of ppp0. In addition found that ppp-compress-21 was aliased to
bsd_comp a module I must not have as modprobe can't install it
(argghh). That leads me to the questions of the night: Could it be that
even though ifconfig shows ppp0 route can't find it because it's not
loaded. And where might I find the needed modules?

Sorry for the length I'm a rambling newbie, it's late and I'm tired.

Thanks again for all the help,
Gauol

since you're using a winmodem, you probably need to

alias ppp0 winmodemdriver

and possibly

alias ppp-compress-21 off

bsd_comp is the correct module , but you don't seem to have it compiled in your kernel or as a module.
