However, according to my post, you will find it similar to Red Hat and Fedora Core in GNOME and again sorry that I do not have any idea about Ubuntu, though I am interested to use it in future if I get it.

A request : you please edit the particulars of you (what distro u use, your location, etc etc.).

...monstruosity called wvdial...
When I was on dialup I prefered wvdial because it was quick, clean, and worked.
Check "man wvdial", "man wvdialconf", and "wvdial.conf" for information.

thanks for your answer. I had checked man wvdial but not man wvdial.conf.

I was angry because the supposedly smart wvdial sometimes entered an endless redial loop with a "no carrier" error. This would not have been a great problem on a normal PC. But this machine is an internet router with a web interface for controlling the dial-up connexion. Due to the occasional redial loop, the web interface would sometimes get stuck in the "dialing connexion, please wait" phase.
This can be fixed in the wvdial.conf file, but I think it is ... not smart (trying to be polite here) to have unlimited redial as a default value.
Apart from that, wvdial is a great piece of software now that I have found the documentation.

Thanks again!
