at the moment I'm staying in China. So far all efforts connecting the internet under Linux with the build in modem of my laptop failed. Using XP I have no problem to connect (Number, Login, Passwort: 16300 ).

I am sure that the modem is set up fine, as I could use it back in Germany. I dont know what the problem is, but it seems that I can dial to the provider but something during the handshake fails. (Even when I use Minicom I don't get more than the usual funny sounds bevore the connection should start). I googled around but I could not find any hints. Maybe trying an other provider would help but I also could not find any appropriate, up to date webpage about internet by call providers in China.

Has anyone an idea, or even better succesfull experience with internet by call in China?

What type of modem do you have? Is it hardware or firmware-driven (linmodem)? (Tip: it might tell you if you run /sbin/lspci)

You probably need to pass an initiallisation string to the modem. In XP, You can turn on a modem setting to create a log-file when you connect; if you do this and you can find the log, then you can read the AT… strings that it's using. Try typing those in in Minicom prior to the ATDT… and see what happens.

Well the modem is a linmodem (Agere Systems AC`97), but I think it is installed correctly as it worked well in Germany. From listening to the speaker output the modem can dial out well.

So if I understand you right you think it might make a Difference when I sent AT &F E0 &C1 &D2 V1 S0=0\V1 and then ATS7=60S30=0L0M1\N3%C1&K3N1\J1X4 bevore I dial (send ATDT,...)?

A) What do I have to do now to set up the ppp connection?
(I can not ping out yet)

or
B) An other option might be to set the connection time out from wvdial or pon to 90 seconds. Using minicom the whole connection procedure takes about 76 seconds while pon and wvdial already give up after around 48 seconds.
So do you have an idea where I can set the time out to 90 seconds? (I could not find such an entry in /etc/wvdial.conf or /etc/ppp/)

I don't remember the answers to those questions off-hand but I'm pretty sure they're covered in the dialup-howto on www.tldp.org
