dial-up connection performance

I recently got my dial-up internet connection working with RedHat 8, but browsing and downloading is terribly slow. Normally I would attribute it to the dial-up connection, but I'm dual booting with Win XP and Windows is noticeably faster. I'm using a 3com pcmcia modem. Does anyone have any suggestions for increasing dial-up connection speeds, or troubleshooting slow connections? Thanks for any responses.

Do you have the compression modules loaded?
These would be ppp_deflate,bsd_comp and slhc.

When the box connects what speed does it connect at? Is it in the /var/log/messges?

Thanks for the response. I guess I should have thought to look at /var/log/messages. I was connecting at 9600bps. I found that in /etc/wvdial.conf Baud was set to 460800...I think this is the max allowed in redhat-network-config. I set it to my actual modem speed, 57600, and things are much better now.

bsd_comp isn't loaded and I couldn't find it in /lib/modules. I guess I'm wondering if it's worth recompiling my kernel for this module, or if there's an easier way to get it. Also, in /var/log/messages I get:

modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21

Anybody know what this is? ppp_deflate and slhc are both loaded.

Thanks again.
