dial-up connection dies in suse 11.0

Hi,
I am trying to get a US Robotics 56K Fax modem to work on Suse 11.0 but I keep getting the following message:

- ppp daemon died unexpectedly. error status = 19.

Now I know that error code 19 has to do with failed authentication:

Here is the debug file for kppp:
ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT0860008484
CONNECT 36000/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS

...then it dies.

and the wvdial.conf file

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/modem
Baud = 57600
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
Init3 =
Area Code =
Phone = 0
Username = ***********
Password = ***********
Ask Password = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Stupid Mode = 1
Compuserve = 0
Force Address =
Idle Seconds = 300
DialMessage1 =
DialMessage2 =
ISDN = 0
Auto DNS = 1

I am normally on a LAN with a FritzBox FonATA router which I disabled with ifconfig eth0 down in root before attempting to dial the USR modem.

Could it be a permissions problem? Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA

You might try adding these lines to the ppp options file:

Code:

cp-echo-interval 30
lcp-echo-failure 4
lcp-max-configure 60
lcp-restart 2

seagreen 10-12-2009 04:11 PM

I tried your suggestion but now get exit status = 2
You have posted an invalid option to pppd

MyBad! The first line should read:
Code:

lcp-echo-interval 30
Sorry.

There's the problem. Something wrong in the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file.

Permissions maybe? Should be rw for root only.

Format of a line should be:
Code:

client  server  secret  IP addresses
I've never used chap, so I have no first hand insights, but Google ought to help.
