DIAL-UP Configuration netmask
 

Hi,

I have a question regarding Dial-Up service whenever we r getting connected to an ISP either you will be assigned an IP from the DHCP of ISP or we will be using a static IP. But I am unable to understand why the netmask is showing all the octets with 255.This is little bit confusing me..can anyone helpme to resolve this....

the connection btw u n ur isp is a ppp connection. the isp allocates u only 1 public ip-address hence the reason for 255.255.255.255 mask. This is coz ipv4 addresses are nearly exhausted (you can then use masquerading to share this address with
ur internal hosts) it is purely to conserve public ip addresses.

if u are familiar with tha addressing scheme u will realize that a different mask from 255.255.255.255 means that you have more than 1 address allocated to you

Thanks for sending reply, so the only reason for having all the octets 255 is only due to the IPv4 exhaustion.


with the addressing scheme I am able to understand that a different mask from 255.255.255.255 means that I have more than 1 address allotted.
