dhcpd lease question
Is it un-common to have a lease time of 10 minutes? The reason I ask is I have computers always coming and going from my network. If you are curious this is for LAN parties. I was wondering if requesting/renewing a lease every 10 minutes is going to interfere with the gaming.

Is it un-common for a 10 minute dhcp lease... er yeah.
Would that affect gaming accross a LAN? I dunno. I usually have my dhcp server running as the gateway and Masq box with netradio, and fat downloads going on with different machines and the renewal of 3-4 dhcp leases all at once never makes it hiccup, and its just a puny P133 laptop. It would make sense to think that there's just too little traffic involved in a lease negotiation to matter in LAN traffic, but I might be wrong. Cheers, Finegan |
DHCP leases can be assigned almost any length from zero seconds to infinity. It will vary depending on the kinds of hosts being served. If your office environment where systems are added from time to time and removed from time to time, but move relatively infrequently, it might make sense to allow leasae times of a month or more.
