dhcp networking

hello

I have just setup a dhcp server, using debian. In win2k when the server isnt on it magically assignes itself an ip address so i can still use the rest of my network. Then when i turn on the server it gets the dhcp address the server assignes it. (i think theis is from me pinging the server). However on my debian client it doesnt do this.
So i was wondering if i could somehow assign my linux client an ip when the server is turned off, so i can still use the network?

I dont think this is actually possible bu i thought i might give it a try anyway.

any help, or pointing in any direction would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ryan

The only way I can think of doing it is to write a script to compliment the network script in /etc/init.d.

The script would be called at startup instead of the network one. Simply make the script ping the address of the dhcp server. If you get a response then call service network start. If you do not get a response then use ifconfig to set the computer to the temporary IP address.

Hope this idea helps

hello

I found an easier way again. sort of.

instead of pinging the server, just make your ip static and set the gateway to the servers ip address.

this seems to work.

Thanks anyway.
