Question dhcp issues

Hi-

I've got my eth0 device set up to obtain it's IP address via DHCP from my cable modem ISP, and it has been working for a long time now. To remove a hard drive, I had to take the machine down, and now when I bring it up it can't obtain an IP address for that interface. The windows machines that i have have no problem getting an address though. If anyone has any thoughts about what I should do, I would really appreciate it. My distribution is Mandrake 9.0.

Here's what I am seeing:

Code:
# ifup eth0
Determining IP information for eth0... failed.
In /var/log/dhcpcd.log:
Code:
Feb 16 14:21:21 server dhcpcd[6147]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response
Feb 16 14:21:22 server dhcpcd[6180]: recvfrom: Network is down
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.exe: line 29: .: filename argument required
.: usage: . filename

You can actually connect with different machines???

Most places use the MAC address of your nic to identify your pc on the line..... changing these cuases you to not be able to connect.

But if you had things working before.... then that's really weird.....

anything important on the drive you took out???

you know what, you are exactly right. like a moron i forgot that i had temporarily connected with a different machine, and that it had grabbed that machine's mac card. luckily i remembered how the tech-help person on the other end told me once how to reset the cable modem.... (unplug the cable & the power, wait for a few minutes, then plug everything back in).
