DHCP in linux

Right now I can get on on my home network but in order to do this I must do the command "ifconfig wlan0 192.168.254.4" (of course i do put this in startup)

Anyways. im on a network that uses DHCP, so every few days I have to change my IP manually (in order to stay on the same range as the rest of the people on my network)

Now according to my windows partiton, the DHCP server is 192.168.254.254. is there a way to make my linux box use DHCP instead of my manually giving it an IP, which i must change every so often.

PS. I'm using slack 9 if that makes a difference

Question

This may seem a bit stupid and even more totally off the mark but have you tried doing "netconfig" or if no that there are some wireless tools (I think they are called iw***** in the /usr/bin or /usr/sbin directory) if they are installed, if not you can installed them and those might help out

if this doesn't help sorry for jumping in with the wrong feet.

i tried that and it didnt help. I dont even think it knew to configure my wlan0, although im not sure what it tried to configure.

all i know is that my PPP stoped working (it would work but it didnt regester as my connection in mozilla or any other internet using applications) and i had to do pppsetup again in order to start using the internet again. and also, i already did the iwconfig. by the time i am able to get on my network iwconfig is over and done with. as i said, i can get on my network, but i dont like having to manually change my IP every few days.

is there any other way to put my wlan0 on a DHCP server

Just do the following:

cd /etc/rc.d

Use then vim or any other editor you like and uncomment from rc.inet1

USE_DHCP=yes

Also, don't forget to uncomment and provide a hostname for your computer:

DHCP_HOSTNAME= "slack91onP4"

Good luck.
