Red face dhcp & network problems

ok..this is my problem..

I have 2 windows xp pro machines and 1 slackware linux 9.0 "server" (it doesnt really serve anything yet..) on my LAN. I have internet connection sharing running on one windows machine (192.168.0.1 in my LAN cause it has to be set to that IP). Anyway, when i first got slack installed on my slack box, it started up ok, i ran dhcpcd and it grabbed an ip from the windows xp pro ICS server machine and i could access the internet and do whatever i want.. I even installed samba and ssh and got both of them working. Now, for some reason, i cannot grab an IP when i use dhcpcd, and when i check my ethernet card using "ifconfig eth0", it says it is sending packets, but it's not receiving anything. When i try pinging 192.168.0.1 it says network is unreachable or when i try pinging 192.168.0.10 (my switch), it says the same thing. I know it cant be a wiring problem or the NIC because 1) it was working like 2 days ago..2) the cable is new cause it came with the switch, and 3) the nic card is fine, i tested that out.

So...how can i fix this? I'm trying to avoid compiling my kernel or reinstalling cause this computer is a pentium pro 150Mhz with 64MB of ram..

Any ideas?

Hi, I'm new at linux... but networking is my better side. Have you tried to ping 127.0.0.1? It is possible that your localhost (127.0.0.1) or the domain tied to it - localhost.localdomain was changed some how.

I think when you type 'ifconfig' you should be able to get the 'lo' network designation as well. If you do not, then that is where your problem is. Unfortunately, from here I am unsure how to help correct the situation.

Can anyone else jump in?

i had a similar problem a while back....my redhat box stopped getting an IP from my Linksys "router". I just hard coded the Linux box to 192.168.1.200 and said screw DHCP.

oh, to hardcode:

#ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.200 bcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0

change the IP as needed.

I used netconfig and i changed my IP to 192.168.0.7, and it still couldnt connect to my windows ICS host. Then i switched back to dhcp it couldnt find the ICS host again. I tried doing dhcpcd and that didnt work after i tried configuring it again.

Any ideas?

The reason why I asked you to ping your local host is that it is something that can be changed if you are not careful. I did it to myself once and it took me weeks to realize what I had done. So on the machine that is having problems, try to ping yourself.

Other than that I need some more info. Perhaps the link-sys and xp systems have something going that is locking out your slackware box. I do, however, think that it is very much a software thing on the slack box. Were there any changes made when the problems started popping up - new software, added code, a changed firewall... firewall settings that block everything?

I tried pinging myself and it worked.

The only thing that i had done to it is start the ssh daemon, and configured samba. I've used netconfig to change my hostname and network settings (just cause i'm still learning a little...i dont know what files to edit). I think after i used netconfig and i rebooted..it didnt work anymore..i'm not quite sure.
