Has anybody ideas for the following:

* there are two DHCP address pools - pool A for machines with known MAC, and pool B for anything else.
* when DHCP server receives a request for an IP, it contacts the LDAP-server and checks if the MAC exists there.
* if MAC exists in the LDAP, it assigns an IP from pool A
* if MAC does not exist in the LDAP, it assigns an IP from pool B.

Has anybody done/seen anything like this and is willing to share knowledge?
Any references would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

netreg - automated dhcp registration using pop/ldap authentication

There you go. We installed such a system last june, and it's been running till now without hiccups.

NOTE: try to follow the steps EXACTLY - correct Linux version, correct packages version... otherwise.... you might run into problems.

And after you're done, I wouldnt recommend running up2date, or it might break.

Do these steps:

1. print out the installation manual
2. Follow the instructions to the dot
3. If anything went wrong, like a particular thing didnt install properly etc, or needed something else, mark it down.
<some dependencies, are installed later.... its werid i know...
like X needs Y, but installs with a 'warning'. but Y is installed down the list..>
4. If you make a mistake, start from scratch all over again... 2/3 installs are needed to get the hang of the system.
