Determining IP information for eth0....failed

Hi All,
I am a newbie trying to connect 2 linux boxes through a switch and on one of them I get the error " Determining IP information for eth0... failed".

I am attaching the output from lsmod, dmesg, ifconfig -a and route for ready reference.

I think you either need to give the machine a static ip address, configure it to get an ip address from a DHCP server, fix your dhcp server. or set up a dhcp server because you don't have one.

If the two linux box are the only things on the network (no internet access) then just make one 192.168.0.2 and the other 192.168.0.3 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and no gateway address.

linuxnew 04-11-2004 07:13 AM

I am not able to setup the dhcp server

on giving the command "/sbin/service/dhcpd start" I get the following error

DHCPD IS FOR A DHCP SERVER !!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot stress this enough, too many people are trying to get there network going by using DHCPD witch is not right.

You need to setup your box in the networking section tu USE DHCP or BootP.
Your router should already be setup for DHCP service.

instead of typing dhcpd, type: ifdown eth0 ; ifup eth0

then ifconfig should show an eth0 device with an INET_ADDR line with your lan IP.

linuxnew 04-11-2004 05:34 PM

Thanks for the reply Autopsy,

I set the "Automatic obtain IP address to dhcp" in the network configuration utility.
I tried giving ifdown eth0 at the prompt no output, then I gave ifup eth0 and the output says
"Determining IP information for eth0....connect: Network is unreachable
failed"

AutOPSY 04-11-2004 05:45 PM

what is your switch connected to?

linuxnew 04-11-2004 07:41 PM

The switch connects both the computers, it is not connected to the internet or anyother outside network. Simply put, the two boxes are connected through the switch.

Thanks

AutOPSY 04-12-2004 12:12 AM

OK well in that case, you need to turn off DHCP/BootP.

Set an IP address for the machine in question, and add the other computers IP and name to the /etc/hosts file, I was under the impression you needed DHCP IP connectivity.

Set an IP instead of using DHCP, and see if ifconfig has the set IP under the INET_ADDR section.

If you still experience problems, post errors, for when you use ifup eth0 and or the output of ifconfig .
You are not far from sifting out the problem.
But no, you absolutely do not need dhcpd for a switch.

I am trying to setup a small cluster as discussed in http://home.attmil.ne.jp/a/jm/

from thread

hence the need to setup dhcp. Meanwhile when I run the command "/usr/sbin/dhcpd -d -f eth0" I get a new error message

ok, man Im confused.
What are you doing setting up a beoWulf cluster if you cant even get you Linux machine working with DHCP, ?? LOL!!

linuxnew 04-13-2004 09:24 PM

that made me lol, I think I got it. The machine is assigned an IP address based upon the mac address.

AutOPSY 04-13-2004 11:39 PM

I don't believe what you need is a switch if youve already got a DHCP server running beyond the switch. lol ~!

If your machines cant both get along using DHCP, then I wouldnt doubt its because its broken, or because a switch operates on a lower level than a router, only 1 can use DHCP at a time.

Setup a DHCP server outside of the switch, and then turn on DHCP/BootP lol!

perry 05-11-2004 06:05 AM

Ok, DUMB QUESTION TIME!

I just went to work and reinstalled Windows 2000 on my Dell (don't worry it's multi-boot, I run mostly my Mandrake 9.1 on it). However, I needed some extra space, so I deleted the Win2K partition and re-installed from scratch (I waited too long, should have done so years ago).

In any event, I'm in the process of giving it essentially a very clean and lean install. The reason for putting it back on is basically for a fallback.

In any event, I put ZoneAlarm on yesterday and where I'm connected to the Internet via a LinkSys box, I have told ZA to accept 192.168.0.x as a legitamate network range.

This morning, ZA dings with a "New Network Detected: IP Address 168.254.0.0" what should ZA do....

Now I'm picking up bits and pieces from the Internet that this has to do with a default DHCP address. Can somebody fill me in on whether this thing is actually dangerous? And what sould I do about it. One more note, I do have another computer connected to the LinkSys box and it would be nice to have them networked. Oddly, I can do this easily (albeit not automatically) under Linux & NFS. I'd like to be able to do it under Win2K, the other machine is usually in WinXP mode (for the kids).

thanks a bunch

- perry
