Determine descriptive name for interface

I would like to determine the descriptive name for a network interface. It may either be wired or wireless ethernet and may either be ISA, PCI, or PCMCIA. I have seen where I can use ethtool to determine the PCI device address and then correlate that to lspci output to determine what I am looking for, but this pattern doesn't seem to work for my wireless PCMCIA adapter. My preferred solution would be one written in C code; however, a command-line/script solution may also be acceptable.
