I recently setup a dual boot on my main computer. With windowsxp home and redhat 9.0.

WD 40 gb hdd (windows drive)
WD 10 gb hdd (RedHat drive)
ATI radeon 9200 SE 128 mb ddr ram 8x AGP card
256 mb pc133 sdram
52x cdrom
sony Floppy
Soyo 7VBA133U mobo
1.3 Ghz celeron (p3 base) processor

Computer that the Printer is connected to that I want to print with from my redhat machine.

Computer specs: (comp with HP Deskjet 3820 Printer connected)
Windows XP Home
WD 20 gb hdd (windows primary)
Nvidia geforce4 mx 440 pci card
396 mb pc100 sdram
345 mhz genuine intel processor


All computers are networked through a linux redhat 9 machine i setup as a router useing iptables, & firestarter.

My windows machines are on a workgroup FRHOME and I can print from both machines with the Deskjet 3820. I tried to set up the printer via the printer setup guide.

I don't know how to set it up, to work with the printer that's connected to the windows machine?

I'm not fully advanced really in config. I got some help from my Cisco Teacher who does know a lot more about linux than me. He helped me with the config and setting it up.

I've only been useing linux for about 7 months now. I setup a dual boot, and have been messing around with httpd, but haven't been able to setup ftp, or can't get samba worken either.

I'm not fully novice but I'm not to sure what to do with setting up the printer. I heard of something with cups, and also something to do with samba but I'm not sure how to setup either.

I do go to the add a printer. and the deskjet does show up there but when I click it It doesn't connect to it for the test page.

I went through setup again and it didn't work.
It states unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds. I don't have a SAMBA server setup on the WindowsXP Home machine.that has the printer connected to it. I don't know if that's what I need to do or what? This is confuseing me to much. I want to be able to print from my redhat 9 distro so I'll be able to get rid of windows except for when I need to do some gameing. Any idea's anyone??

I know nothing of Redhat, but have successfullly connected to my WinXP home machine's Epson from both a Debian and a FreeBSD machine. Using CUPS and Samba on both nix machines and have the XP machine as Net master but as Samba client to the others. CUPS runs the printing daemon and Samba SMB's with Windows. Maybe I can help.

Maybe you can. I just added some stuff to the past post of mine. I went through the setup again but it didn't work. I'm not sure hwo to setup samba, or to setup cups. Do I just need to run samba on my linux machine or do I need to install something on my windowsXp Home (printer) machine??

Does your Redhat come with Samba and Cups? Can ya RPM get them? Search the web with a decent engine like google for Redhat samba cups printing. Once you get them installed on ur linux system and read a couple of the not so clear how-to's, take a look at eh conf files and read some of the documentation, we can take it from there. Install Samba first. A tutorial at linuxorbit.com called 17 easy steps to Samba: version 1.1 is good quick start. Don't worry about the version.

Yes I have Samba and cups. They are both installed to my knowledge. I've messed with samba a little but I could never get it running correctly. Do I need to use cups if the printer is connected to another machine on my network. It's also a windowsXP home machine by the way.


I looked through that 17 easy steps to Samba and I think all I have to do that I forgot is config the smb.conf file a lil, put a password on there and the run the samba server and it should hopefully work out alright... I'm hoping that is. Not really sure if it'll run smoothly or not.

Now I just gotta figure out how to setup an ftp server and i'm good to go.
