default route takes a "name"

When I set my default route and do a netstat -r I get told that my default gateway is ??

I don't do any kinky stuff to my network setup just plain static ip but it seems like if my dns is not set correctly then my box can't see my default route ?? ie it needs to be able to resolve the above mentioned name,, but when I do a nslookup of the above mentioned name it gives nothing ???

The use of a host name for your default gateway is for display purposes only by the netstat command. The router will use the actual IP address in any routing operation.

Try doing a reverse lookup on the IP address with nslookup or dig and see if it returns the same host name.

If you look at the help for the netstat command, there may be a command line switch you can use to force it to display the IP address instead of the host name. I believe you can also use route -n to display the routing table and not do any name lookup.

thanks the -n worked, it was driving me nuts trying to resolve, dhcpd had changed my resolv.conf on another network,, imo netstat should never block on something like that by default, not for the routing table anyway.
