default gateway question

i have a new network switch and i'm using it on my own little LAN.
this has no internet connectivity.
i have a few pc's and i set static ip addresses to them all...
192.168.0.1 for pc-1
192.168.0.2 for pc-2
and so on,
each pc the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

on my new network switch, i set it's ip address to 192.168.0.100.
but it wants some number for gateway, i cannot leave it blank.
what is the proper ip address to put in there?
is it based on the subnet mask?

It's wherever you want it to send packets when it's trying to get to the internet. Make it any address other than itself (.100) or broadcast (.255). If you make it .1 you can listen with tcpdump from pc-1 to see what it is trying to send.

if the switch is set at 192.168.0.100
you are saying do not make the gateway .100 and do not make it .255 ?
sorry i'm dumb when it comes to network stuff like this.
why would using .255 be bad?

The address in the network, .255, is broadcast. One packet sent out on the address will go every connected host on network.
