Question default gateway

I have a mandrake 9.0 linux and a windows XP professional which is connected to the internet (ADSL)
I can ping from the linux to the XP but I can't define the default gateway in a way that it will be kept between boots.

after I reboot I have to enter (in root user):
route add default gw twins2 (which is my XP station name)

after that everyting works fine.
where do I define a "permanent" route ?

Well.. there is nothing really permanent.. after all, that's what an operating system does while booting: restoring all the settings, and start all requires programs. The fun part of the linux boot is, linux allows you to alter this process completely.

In my case, (slackware), the script /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 is commonly used to setup the internet. In fact, they've even put variables (ip / gateway) in there to make my life easier. At the end of the script, I see the line "route add default gateway ${gateway} metric 1".

So all you need to do, is edit such a similar script at your debian system.

In Redhat, the default gateway is configured in /etc/sysconfig/network. I don't know about Mandrake.

just add "GATEWAY=blablabla" in file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 or eth1 ect.

Then restart network devices:
/etc/init.d/ ./network restart

Check routetable:
