I usually set static IP addresses on my Linux boxes, and I set the gateway address in the same file (i.e. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0).
I've inherited a VmWare ESX box (modified Red Hat 7.3), that only has the IPADDR and NETMASK parameters set, no mention of GATEWAY, yet the machine has no problem pinging machines outside it's subnet.
I ran the route command and saw the correct gateway address referenced there.

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.10.48.0 * 255.255.252.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default 10.10.48.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0
Obviously, the default gateway address is set somewhere else. Can someone tell me other places it could be set besides in the configuration file of the ethernet port itself?
